Safer Home – To Do List

Senior walking to his mailbox from his safe home

The risk of falling increases as we age.  If you plan to remain in your current home, make sure it’s safe.  Repairing carpets, getting rid of extra furniture, better lighting–these are just a few of the things you can do to make your current home safer. Senior Seasons recommends the following to-do list to keep you or your loved one comfortable and out of harm’s way.

Inside

  • Reduce clutter from floor – clear away small objects such as step stools
  • Remove throw rugs
  • Repair worn carpet
  • Remove electrical cords from pathways
  • Replace or eliminate furniture that is too low to rise from
  • Ensure that the telephone is reachable from the floor or carry a portable phone in your walker basket or fanny pack
  • Place frequently used items in easy-to-reach cabinets
  • Install handrails on all stairs
  • If there are multiple steps in an area, mark the top and bottom stair with contrasting tape
  • Keep the pathway to the bathroom well lit with night-lights
  • Install grab bars in shower and near the toilet
  • Place non-skid mats in the shower/tub
  • Use shower chair/bath bench for bathing
  • Use recommended walking aids (cane, walker)
  • Wear prescribed glasses when walking
  • Wear properly fitted shoes with non-skid soles
  • Wear flat or low-heeled, closed-toe shoes
  • Avoid walking in stocking feet or loose slippers
  • When getting out of bed, sit for a few seconds before standing to avoid becoming lightheaded or dizzy
  • Be aware of medication side effects. Take extra caution when moving about if necessary.
  • Be aware of combining medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review their combined effects

Outside

  • Repair cracked sidewalks
  • Keep shrubbery trimmed back from access paths around the home
  • Install adequate lighting
  • Install handrails on stairs

Arrange for Help

  • Outside assistance is readily available for errands, repairs, remodels, health care, and companionship
