Safer Home To Do List

The risk of falling increases as we age.  If you plan to remain in your current home, make sure it’s safe.  Repairing carpets, getting rid of extra furniture, better lighting–these are just a few of the things you can do to make your current home safer. Senior Seasons recommends the following to-do list to keep you or your loved one comfortable and out of harm’s way. 

INSIDE  

  1. Reduce clutter from floor – clear away small objects such as step stools
  2. Remove throw rugs
  3. Repair worn carpet
  4. Remove electrical cords from pathways
  5. Replace or eliminate furniture that is too low to rise from
  6. Ensure that the telephone is reachable from the floor or carry a portable phone in your walker basket or fanny pack
  7. Place frequently used items in easy-to-reach cabinets
  8. Install handrails on all stairs
  9. If there are multiple steps in an area, mark the top and bottom stair with contrasting tape
  10. Keep the pathway to the bathroom well lit with night-lights
  11. Install grab bars in shower and near the toilet
  12. Place non-skid mats in the shower/tub
  13. Use shower chair/bath bench for bathing
  14. Use recommended walking aids (cane, walker)
  15. Wear prescribed glasses when walking
  16. Wear properly fitted shoes with non-skid soles
  17. Wear flat or low-heeled, closed-toe shoes
  18. Avoid walking in stocking feet or loose slippers
  19. When getting out of bed, sit for a few seconds before standing to avoid becoming lightheaded or dizzy
  20. Be aware of medication side effects. Take extra caution when moving about if necessary.
  21. Be aware of combining medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review their combined effects

OUTSIDE

  1. Repair cracked sidewalks
  2. Keep shrubbery trimmed back from access paths around the home
  3. Install adequate lighting
  4. Install handrails on stairs
